Miami Marlins 'leaning towards' tendering offer to Henderson Alvarez

The 25-year old has been on the disabled list with a shoulder injury.

Henderson Alvarez has been on the disabled list with a shoulder injury but the Marlins at least appear interested in bringing him back next season. Alvarez has said he should be able to pitch by February, and according to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald, the Marlins are "leaning towards" tendering an offer to him.

Alvarez underwent shoulder surgery to repair a tear in July and there have been numerous questions with regard to his future in Miami. Alvarez was also Miami's opening day starter with Jose Fernandez on the disabled list to open the year. He did not have a notable amount of early success, posting a 6.45 ERA and 3.78 FIP over 22.1 innings. Alvarez did thrive in 2014, posting a 2.65 ERA and 3.58 FIP over 187.0 innings.

Although the Marlins have not publicly revealed their offseason plan, the expectation is the organization is planning on adding at least a pair of starting pitchers. Fernandez was dominant in his return from the disabled list on Saturday night and the Marlins are likely planning on continuing to build around him. Tom Koehler has pitched well this season and should earn a spot in the 2016 rotation but beyond that the Marlins might have spots to fill.

Jarred Cosart has returned from an extensive disabled list stint and several prospects, including Justin Nicolino, Kendry Flores and Adam Conley could be considered. If Alvarez does earn a starting job and pitches well, the Marlins might only be inclined to add one starting arm. However, to this point, opting not to tender him a contract might remain a possibility.

Jackson adds Alvarez could make up to $4 million in arbitration, which is still relatively affordable for a starting pitcher. The tender deadline is not until December, so if Alvarez passes his physical this winter, there is likely a good chance he remains with the club.

When healthy, Alvarez has proven to be both productive and healthy. The Marlins do have a decision to make with regard to Alvarez's future. But if he is completely healthy, it might not take much for Miami to tender him a deal.
