The Marlins have scored 23 runs during this three game winning streak, thoroughly trashing Red Sox pitching and generally looking competent, a nice change of pace from the ice cold stretches we've endured. They also have the good timing to be on fire whilst facing the #1 team in the majors record-wise, the St. Louis Cardinals.
On paper, it's a mis-match. The best team vs. the worst team. At times masterful if oft-injured Jaime Garcia vs. mediocre most of the time Tom Koehler. If this were the NFL and we were analyzing this as a one-off, a dominant squad facing an underdog, at home, you'd be forced to come to the conclusion that the Cardinals were going to take this game, probably in convincing fashion.
But it's not Football, is it? Baseball is a little more unpredictable then that. For me, that's part of it's allure, the chance that on any given day in any given game, something strange and wonderful can happen, something that defies the odds. No-hitters, amazing catches, homeruns that land in ridiculous spots. Asking the Marlins to beat the Cardinals wouldn't be so outrageous, given that context, would it?
So sally forth with thy best efforts, Tom Koehler and Derek Dietrich! Onward to victory, Mike Dunn and Ichiro! Join me in my most stringent desire to make Cardinals fans sad today.
