Henderson Alvarez's season is over. Alvarez was placed on the disabled list with a shoulder injury and while the Marlins remained optimistic, Alvarez will be shut down for the remainder of the season. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro was told Alvarez underwent surgery to repair a shoulder tear.
Alvarez was Miami's opening day starter with Jose Fernandez on the disabled list to open the year. He did not have a notable amount of early success, posting a 6.45 ERA and 3.78 FIP over 22.1 innings. Alvarez thrived in 2014, posting a 2.65 ERA and 3.58 FIP over 187.0 innings.
The Marlins are expected to be active leading up to Friday's non-waiver trade deadline and the Alvarez injury should not have a significant impact on their strategy. Mat Latos and Dan Haren are both starters who could be dealt, however the Marlins have a notable amount of starting pitching depth. Even with Alvarez sidelined, Latos and Haren might both be traded.
