Miami had difficulty solving Ian Kennedy and could not rally late as the Padres topped the Marlins 3-1 in game three of the four game series at Petco Park on Saturday night.
San Diego got to David Phelps early, however he was able to settle down. Over six innings, Phelps allowed a pair of runs to complement one walk and five strikeouts. Kennedy was a bit more successful, though, allowing one run over six innings of work.
The Padres put together three consecutive one out singles in the bottom of the first before a Yonder Alonso sacrifice fly gave the club a one run edge. Kennedy doubled with two outs in the bottom of the second and scored on a Will Venable RBI single, making it a 2-0 contest.
Miami got on the board in the seventh, as Derek Dietrich opened the inning with a home run, however a Melvin Upton Jr. single in the bottom of the frame pushed the Padres' lead back to two.
Mike Dunn and Carter Capps pitched well out of Miami's bullpen but the Marlins were unable to put together a late rally. The Marlins were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and can split the four game series with a victory on Sunday.
