Those on the east coast who stayed up to see the Fish play got to see a series win after a 5-3 victory. Jose Fernandez pitched his way to his third win of the season. He gave up three earned runs over seven innings with an eye popping eleven strikeouts.
In the second inning Miami got on board first after JT Realmuto hit an RBI double that drove in Casey McGehee. The next batter, Cole Gillespie, hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Michael Morse to tag up and score from third. Later in the inning Jose Fernandez made the win a little easier with a ground rule double that drove in Realmuto.
The D-Backs were able to shrink Miami's lead in the fourth with an RBI single from Yasmany Thomas. The next batter, Jake Lamb, hit an RBI triple.
In the fifth inning Miami added to their 3-2 lead after Ichiro hit a triple, allowing Fernandez to score. Next, Martin Prado hit a single driving in Ichiro.
Arizona's last attempt to come back was in the seventh against Fernandez. Ender Inciarte hit a double that allowed Oscar Hernandez to score.
After most of the Marlins bullpen was put to work against Arizona, AJ Ramos was put in to finish the game in the ninth. He struggled with the first batters he met but struck out the last three batters he faced.
