Marlins' Dee Gordon will likely avoid disabled list stint

MIAMI -- Dee Gordon will not be placed on the 15-day disabled list. Gordon dislocated his right thumb following a headfirst slide into first base on Saturday afternoon but President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill said Sunday he should return shortly after the All-Star break.

"It was dislocated as well all saw," Hill said. "It could have been much worse. We're optimistic we won't have to place him on the disabled list. We'll continue to monitor him which is nice."

Gordon, 27, has had a notable amount of success with the Marlins in the first half, posting a .333/.355/.409 batting line to complement one home run and 21 RBIs. He has also stolen 33 bases, leads the majors with 122 hits, and has anchored an offense that has been without Giancarlo Stanton.

The Marlins will use a combination of Donovan Solano, Miguel Rojas, and Derek Dietrich at first base. Martin Prado, who is out with a shoulder injury but is working out daily, could play second base if necessary when he is healthy.

"We'll wait and see," Hill said when asked if Prado playing second base is a possibility. "He was an All-Star second baseman. We know he is versatile but we didn't trade for him to become a second baseman."
