Miami Marlins afternoon news: Gordon and Latos lead Fish past Giants

The speedy second baseman hit the first ever inside-the-park home run in Marlins Park history and the big right-hander gave up only two earned runs in six innings as Miami won the series opener by a score of 5-3. Plus links on Michael Morse, A.J. Ramos and thoughts on a possible rebuild.

Arguably the fastest player to ever set foot on the field at Marlins Park, Dee Gordon became the first player to ever hit an inside-the-park home run in Little Havana last night as his drive to the outfield wall drove in three. In true Dee Gordon fashion, the throw home wasn't even close.

Mat Latos will probably be on the trade block in the upcoming weeks as the July 31st deadline approaches, but the soon-to-be free agent did not let that uncertainty effect his performance against the Giants as he only allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits in six innings for the victory.

Bryan Morris has returned to the Marlins from the DL in a move that sent Justin Nicolino back to AAA New Orleans, and the Fish may have another veteran player return from injury very soon as first baseman Michael Morse could rejoin the team in the next few days despite a recent back muscle issue.

After an underwhelming 2015 so far to say the least, the Marlins clearly have to change a few things to turn the franchise around for the rest of the season and beyond. Is a fire sale and rebuild in the organization's best interests?

It has been a long a difficult process in recovering from Tommy John surgery for Jose Fernandez, but the ace is finally set to return tomorrow. While the whole clubhouse and Miami is excited for the young hurler's return, reliever A.J. Ramos can only empathize with Fernandez as he dealt with the same injury at Texas Tech.

Around the League

Chris Sale has now recorded ten or more strikeouts in eight-straight games, a feat which ties a record set by Pedro Martinez. His 766 K's through 100 starts is more than both Randy Johnson and Sandy Koufax recorded through their first 100 starts.

Dallas Keuchel continues to lead the Houston Astros in the AL West race as he threw a shutout over eight outstanding innings against the Royals last night to lower his AL leading ERA to 2.03.

Albert Pujols has voiced his opinions on the feud between Angels manager Mike Scioscia and general manager Jerry Dipoto over the lack of use of scouting reports and advanced metrics.

Catching legend Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez is still very much involved in baseball, especially through his son, Dereck, who carried a no-hitter into the seventh in a Class-A game the other day while his father was in the crowd.
