Overview
The Marlins will head back home to Miami after a disappointing road-trip against the Blue Jays and Rockies, in which the club went 2-4. The Marlins took two out of three from Colorado last weekend before heading to Toronto, where they got swept by the surging Blue Jays.
The Marlins have really been missing the injured starting pitchers Jarred Cosart, Jose Fernandez, Henderson Alvarez, and Mat Latos. The Fish gave up a total of 22 runs in their series against Toronto, and after Tom Koehler lost on Wednesday, Dan Haren is now the only Marlins starter to have a winning record this season. Only two of the six Marlins to start a game this season have an ERA below four, and besides Dan Haren, no Marlins starter has a strikeout to walk ratio over two.
The Marlins bullpen hasn’t been much better, with closer A.J. Ramos and Sam Dyson the only relievers to post ERA’s under three. A.J. Ramos is also the only Marlin pitcher with a WHIP under one. Dan Haren is the only Marlin pitcher than has a WAR over one.
The Marlin’s offense has been much better, with the team’s .261 batting average ranking fourth in the National League, but the team has struggled getting on base with an OBP of just .309, which ranks tenth in the National League.
Although Giancarlo Stanton has hit 21 homeruns on the season already, the Marlins slugger has a batting average of just .245, but has a solid OBP of .332, and an impressive slugging percentage of .586. Marlins’ Dee Gordon has also seen a drop in production since his outstanding start to the season, but Gordon is still impressively hitting .362/.387/.428 this year.
The Marlins will play the Rockies for the second consecutive weekend, but this time it will be at Marlins Park where the Fish have a record of 12-16. The Marlins are seven and a half games back of the Mets for first place in the NL East entering Thursday night.
