Miami Marlins morning news: Stanton clears Dodger Stadium

The slugger put the Marlins ahead early with a mammoth blast, but the Fis were on the wrong end of a 11-1 rout. Plus links on Rafael Soriano, A.J. Ramos and a possible trade with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Giancarlo Stanton almost broke the internet last night after hitting a home run over the left field stands and out of Dodger Stadium. Even some of the home crowd cheered the moonshot as Stanton joined Mark McGwire, Mike Piazza and Willie Stargell as the only players to hit balls out of Dodger Stadium.

Steve Cishek is no longer the Marlins' closer. While he tries to regain his form from last year, the Marlins are looking for other options to close out games. One of those options is Rafael Soriano, a free agent who has been a successful closer in his career.

The Marlins were close to signing Francisco Rodriguez in the offseason to add bullpen depth. That didn't pan out as he resigned with the Brewers. However, he could be available via trade after Milwaukee's dreadful start to 2015.

It is common knowledge that Giancarlo Stanton strikes out a lot, but he is striking out even more this season. Is this resulting from a problem with plate discipline?

Miami is deciding to close by committee at the moment after the struggles of Steve Cishek. This may work for a while, but who is the best option for the ninth inning in the long run for the Fish?

Around the League

The Marlins have never hit six home runs in a game before. The Mariners have now done it twice after slugging their way to victory over the Padres on Tuesday night.

Noah Syndergaard made his much anticipated Mets debut against the Cubs last night. He threw five and a third innings and allowed three runs in a 6-1 loss.

Yasiel Puig's rehab stint will be put on hold after he tweaked his already injured hamstring in a Class A game. This setback could delay his return to the majors for another week or so.

MLB will never experience a "deflategate" scandal, but that doesn't mean that the league isn't concerned about the state of the baseballs. Ball boys and girls are no longer allowed to retrieve more game balls; an MLB security person now carries out this task.
