The Marlins will be looking to pick themselves back up and go for the W again today, after consecutive blown saves by Steve Cishek. Yesterday's loss was particularly brutal as Christian Yelich had hit a dramatic late two-run blast to take the lead shortly before it was given back by Cishek. Reports are out that Redmond is pondering a closer-by-commitee approach for the interim.
Pitching Matchup
PROJ ERA | FIP | ERA | MARLINS | Dodgers | ERA | FIP | PROJ ERA |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
4.32 | 4.61 | 2.68 | Haren | Bolsinger | 1.59 | 2.44 | 4.26 |
Mike Bolsinger was recalled from AAA Ooooooooooooooklahoma City for today's start. The 27 year old right-hander had one previous start this season where he went five and two thirds innings against the Giants, giving up five hits, one earned run and issuing two walks whilst striking out five. Prior to that he had pitched for the Diamondbacks in 2014, tallying a 5.50 ERA and a 4.01 FIP in 52.1 innings pitched. He has an average to below average arsenal of pitches and Marlins hitters should have their chances to do some damage before he's pulled from the game.
Dan Haren will take the mound for the first time against the team that traded (and still pays) him. Haren went seven strong against the Giants the last go-round, picking up the win in part thanks to his heroics with the bat as much as his own pitching. The 34 year old has been effective for the Fish thus far, but a 4.61 FIP and a miniscule .194 BABIP suggests that an adjustment may be coming. There are worse things you can do then pitch to contact with an above average defense behind you, though. The deep and talented Dodgers line-up could present a challenge for him today.
Standard line-up today. Dee Gordon's hit streak ended at 12 games yesterday after he returned from a couple days off to rest his legs.
Notes:
-The Marlins went 3-3 vs. the Dodgers last season.
-If you had to pick one guy to replace Cishek as closer, who would your choice be? Realistically, anyway. There are no time machines to pick up vintage Dennis Eckersley in this scenario.
-Speaking of time machines, which Civil War veteran do you think inspired Scott Van Slyke's beard?
Bold Prediction: Dodgers beat Marlins 4-3. #MJIJ
