The Marlins have executed one of their first major roster moves of the young season. Catcher Jarrod Saltamacchia has been designated for assignment.
Interest in Saltalamacchia has been non-existent as the Marlins sounded out dealing the catcher earlier in the year. The most likely scenario given Salty's high salary and level of third party interest will probably see him released and the Marlins footing the bill for his remaining $14.2 million in salary. The contract runs through the end of 2016.
Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto is off to a great start since being called up to fill in for the ailing Jeff Mathis. He is batting .265 in 34 at-bats since call up and was a well regarded prospect in the Marlins system prior to the 2015 season. Mathis remains on the DL with a broken finger.
Salty's start to the season was abysmal. He batted just 2 for 29 - a batting average of .069 - underscored by 12 strikeouts.
