Heroes And Zeroes: Mets 5, Marlins 4

Jacob deGrom had the deciding effort in tonight's contest.

Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

Heroes and Zeroes is a series where I take each players contribution to the final result (based on weighted plate appearances) of the ballgame. Each participant in the matchup is ranked from best to worst. The top three are "Heroes," the bottom three are "Zeroes." I used the win expectancy chart from www.fangraphs.com to rank these players.

Heroes

Jacob deGrom (NYM) .205

DeGrom was unsolvable (except for Dee Gordon) from the mound tonight. He pitched seven innings, allowing six singles and zero walks, with eight strikeouts (+24.6%). His performance at the plate left a little to be desired (-10.3%).

Dee Gordon (MIA) .118

Gordon had a pretty good night. He led off the game singling to third (+3.8%), but got thrown out trying to steal second on a Christian Yelich strikeout moments later (-3.8%). He singled to short with two outs and a man on second in the third (+2.0%), singled to left with one out in the sixth (+3.5%), doubled to left to score Jeff Baker with nobody out in the sixth to make the score 5-1 Mets, and added two more RBI with two out in the bottom of the ninth, knocking in Marcell Ozuna and Adeiny Hechavarria on a single to right to bring the Marlins deficit down to one run. It was his second career five hit game.

Juan Lagares (NYM) .116

Lagares hit an RBI single to center field with one out in the second for a 1-0 Mets lead (+10.4%). In the fourth inning, he singled to left, moving Eric Campbell over to second with one out (+2.1%). With a three run lead in the sixth, with one out and one on, he flew out to the catcher (-0.7%), later grounding out with a man on second to end the Mets' eighth (-0.1%).
