Marlins News

Henderson Alvarez slid into home plate safely on Thursday afternoon against the Cardinals, however according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, Manager Mike Redmond was concerned with Alvarez's choice:

"That wasn't what I was looking for," manager Mike Redmond said. "I want him throwing strikes. I don't want to see him sliding into home plate."

An All-Star in 2014, Alvarez is projected as the Marlins' Opening Day starter. The announcement is pending.

Giancarlo Stanton went deep yesterday. It is safe to say he is ready for 2015.

Brad Hand is going to start Friday's contest against the Astros. Jarred Cosart was scheduled to throw but he has a blister on his right middle finger. Hand has been drawing interest in recent days.

Donovan Solano is fighting for a spot on the Marlins' bench. Can he end spring on a positive note?

Cosart is being investigated by Major League Baseball as a result of gambling allegations. There is no time line for the investigation.

Don Kelly is well-liked in Detroit. He is hoping to win a bench spot, and may have an edge because of his versatility.

Alvarez will be the Marlins' ace until Jose Fernandez returns. Consistency will be key.

Miami's starters have struggled of late. Do not make too much of it-it is just spring training, a time to experiment.

Around the League

Jason Heyward has not provided consistent power to this point in his career. But that could change in 2015.

Brady Aiken is the latest pitcher to have Tommy John surgery.

Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez. One lineup. A ton of power.

Yasmany Tomas could open the 2015 season in the minors. Would it make sense?
