Miami Marlins morning news: Marlins' David Samson says Jose Fernandez trade not imminent

Jose Fernandez trade rumors have been discussed consistently this winter. But Marlins President David Samson told MLB.com's Joe Frisaro the club still does not have any plans to move Fernandez.

"As far as what happened in Nashville, it's in a microscope or in a bubble, because the calls for Jose come all during the year also," Samson said. "But it's not written about, because it's not everyone together with media. The Winter Meetings were no different."

Jeff Mathis has agreed to return to Miami on a one-year deal and is expected to backup J.T. Realmuto again in 2016.

While the Marlins have explored potential ways to upgrade, the club has yet to make a major move and remains adamant about building around its core.

If the Marlins decide to trade Marcell Ozuna, Ichiro Suzuki will likely receive a notable amount of playing time next season.

The Marlins are discussing an extension with Dee Gordon, but nothing appears to be close.

Miami will have another Star Wars themed night in 2016.

Nathan Eovaldi pitched well with the Yankees last season, but the Marlins were still able to add a third baseman in the deal.

Gordon's extension could be worth about $28 million.
