Miami discussed taking Nathan Eovaldi out of the rotation before the season ended, but the organization chose to let him end the year as a starter, and Eovaldi pitched well in a 5-1 loss to the Nationals on Saturday night.
Washington got to him and scored a run in the bottom of the second, as a Stephen Strasburg bunt with runners on second and third and one out got the Nationals on the board first.
An Adam LaRoche groundout in the bottom of the fifth pushed the Nationals' lead to five, but that was all the damage Eovaldi would allow.
In seven innings, he allowed two runs while walking three and striking out five.
Stephen Strasburg kept the Marlins' balance off the board, tossing six shutout innings.
An Asdrubal Cabrera three-RBI double against Carter Capps in the eighth pushed Washington's lead to five, and Miami's lone run of the night came on an Anthony Rendon error in the top of the ninth.
