Miami at one point in the year was among the best teams in baseball in one run games. But a night after being eliminated from postseason contention, the Marlins dropped their third consecutive one run contest with a 2-1 loss to the Nationals on Sunday afternoon.
Nathan Eovaldi pitched well with the exception of a two-run top of the fifth inning. Jose Lobaton opened the inning with a double and scored on a Nate Schierholtz RBI triple to give Washington a one run lead. Eovaldi got Stephen Strasburg to ground out, but an Anthony Rendon RBI double to left field gave the Nationals a two run edge that they wouldn't lose.
In six innings, Eovaldi allowed two runs while striking out four and not issuing a walk.
Miami appeared to have solved Strasburg earlier in the year, but couldn't do so on Sunday. Strasburg tossed seven shutout innings and struck out five.
Marcell Ozuna left the game with an ankle sprain after awkwardly sliding into second base, but Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post reported the X-Rays were negative.
Reed Johnson opened the bottom of the ninth with a double against Rafael Soriano, and a Solano sacrifice fly gave the Marlins their first run of the night before Soriano shut things down.
Andrew Heaney pitched well in three innings of relief.
