Triple-A: New Orleans Zephyrs L 3-4 @ Memphis Red Birds
Austin Wates, CF: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B,
Mark Canha, DH: 1-4, 1R, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Justin Bour, 1B: 1-3, 1 R,
Andrew Heaney, SP: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 8 SO, 2 BB
New Orleans got off to a fast start with a Mark Canha first inning two run homerun, but Andrew Heaney could take hold the lead and they were defeated by Memphis 4-3. Heaney with six innings allowing four runs, but only three were earned. The Zephyrs only smacked four hits on the night, and a three run third for Memphis proved to be the difference.
Double A: (DH) Jacksonville Suns L 2-6 L 2-3 vs. Mississippi Braves
Brady Shoemaker, 1B: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, and 1-3
Joe Benson, RF: 2-3, and 1-4
Brent Keys, LF: 1-3, and 1-3, 1 RBI
Jay Rogers, SP: 3.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 1 SO, 1 BB
Chipper Smith, SP: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 SO, 2 BB
The Jacksonville Suns dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Braves. The first game saw the Braves score in all but two innings to win 6-2. Brady Shoemaker's two run homer were the only runs in game one for the Suns. Game two was more tightly contested. The game was tied after seven innings, but a Rich Poythress RBI single in the top of the 8th would be enough to give Mississippi the win.
Advanced Class A: DH Jupiter Hammerheads @ L 0-5 W 9-6 @ Bradenton Marauders
Ryan Goetz , CF: 1-3
Visoergy Rosa , 1B: 1-3, and 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Jesus Solerzano, RF: 1-3
Matt Juengel, LF: 4-4, 1 R, 3 2B, 1 RBI (game 2)
Avery Romero, 3B: 3-4, 1 R, 2 2B, 3 RBI(game 2)
Scott Lyman SP: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 SO, 3 BB
Blake Logan SP: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 3 SO, 0 BB
The Hammerheads struggled to get anything going offensively in the first game and were shutout 5-0 by Bradenton. Jupiter only registered three hits the entire game. Starter Scott Lyman gave up all five runs in five innings pitched. The second game went much better as they came out with a 9-6 win. Matt Juengel exploded for four hits, three doubles, and 1 RBI. Avery Romero rebounded from a hitless first game with three hits in game two. Also of note, Romero started the game at third base rather than second. Definitely something to keep an eye on.
Low Class A: Greensboro Grasshoppers 1-4 @ Hickory Crawdads
Carlos Lopez, RF: 1-4, 1 RBI
Felix Munoz, 1B: 1-4
Yefri Perez, CF: 1-3, 1 R,
Chris Sadberry, SP: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 5 SO, 1 BB
The Grasshoppers dropped a game against the Hickory Crawdads 4-1 on Thursday. Most of the season their bats have been on fire, but they could only muster four hits and one run. No hits were for extra bases, the only run scored on a Carlos Lopez RBI single. In his third start with Greensboro since being called up from Batavia Chris Sadberry pitched well, allowing only one run in five innings of work.
Short Season Class A: Batavia Muckdogs L 1-2 vs. Staten Island Yankees
Mason Davis, 2B: 2-3
Ryan Cranmer DH: 1-2
Aaron Blanton, 3B: 1-4
Michael Mader, SP: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 SO, 2 BB
Batavia fell to the Yankees 2-1 in a low scoring affair Thursday. One of my favorite sleeper prospects Mason Davis knocked two singles, raising his batting average to .325. Michael Mader pitched very well, allowing no runs over four innings. His ERA sits at 1.80 in 30 innings pitched.
Anfernee Seymour, CF: 1-3, 1 R
Zach Sullivan, LF: 2-4, 1 R,
Austen Smith , 1B: 2-4, 1 R
Nick Williams SP: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 3R, 4 SO, 1 BB
The GCL Marlins scored a rare victory with a 6-3 win over the Nationals. Zach Sullivan added two singles to raise his average to .375 in 48 at-bats. Austen Smith also added a pair of hits. Third round pick Justin Twine contributed a hit and an RBI but is still struggling at the plate as he is currently slashing .230/.275/.354.
