Edinson Volquez shut down Miami's offense and Brian Flynn struggled in his first start of the season as the Marlins fell to the Pirates 7-2 on Thursday night.

Pittsburgh got on the board first against Brian Flynn in the fourth. Jordy Mercer opened the frame with a double and scored on a Russell Martin RBI single.

Starling Marte doubled and Jayson Nix walked before a Gregory Polanco single made it a 3-0 contest.

Flynn's struggles continued in the fifth, as Mercer and Gaby Sanchez added RBI singles to push the Pirates' lead to five.

Over his four innings, Flynn allowed all five runs while walking two and striking out three.

Edinson Volquez kept Miami's offense off balance in seven innings of work, during which he allowed just a Donovan Solano single while walking three and striking out seven.

Steve Cishek gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, and Stolmy Pimentel gave up a two run home run off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton before closing things for the Pirates.

Sam Dyson tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief, and A.J. Ramos and Dan Jennings were solid in relief for the Marlins.
