The Miami Marlins used a quality start from Brad Hand and an eighth inning rally to take the first game of the three game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3 on Tuesday night.
Trailing by a run, the Marlins crossed the plate five times in the eighth after struggling to score against Charlie Morton. Giancarlo Stanton walked, Casey McGehee reached on an error, and Jeff Baker singled against Jared Hughes and Justin Wilson, loading the bases with one out.
Marcell Ozuna and Jarrod Saltalamacchia walked to drive in a pair, and Adeiny Hechavarria, Reed Johnson, and Christian Yelich all drove in runs against Jeanmar Gomez to make it a 6-2 contest.
A Jordy Mercer RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the third and Gregory Polanco RBI single in the seventh was all the damage Pittsburgh could do against Hand in six and a third innings. Hand gave up six hits while walking one and striking out four.
Miami's lone run against Morton came in the fourth when Garrett Jones singled with one out and scored on an Ozuna double to left field.
A.J. Ramos and Bryan Morris were solid in relief of Hand, and Chris Hatcher ended the game in the ninth despite allowing a Chris Stewart RBI single to cut the Marlins' lead to three.
