Miami Marlins Minor League Report: July 31

Avery Romero keeps hitting, Jose Urena pitches a gem, and Tyler Kolek struggles.

New Orleans was shutout 4-0 by the Iowa Cubs on Thursday night. They only accumulated five hits on the day, and only one for extra bases. Zack Cox added a single to continue his hot stretch of late. He is hitting .344/.364/.531 in his last ten games. The loss drops New Orleans back below .500 for the season.

The Jacksonville Suns whacked the Stars 8-1 Thursday behind a four-RBI night from center fielder Isaac Galloway. Galloway tallied three hits, and finished a homerun shy of the cycle. Jose Urena pitched well, allowing only one run in seven innings of work.

In their first game without recently traded Colin Moran, Jupiter squeaked out a 1-0 win against Brevard County. Brevard County had more hits, but a Justin Bohn RBI triple proved to be the difference for Jupiter. Scott Lyman worked around three walks, and four hits to hold the Manatees scoreless through six innings. Avery Romero's two hits  raised his average to .338 since being called up to Jupiter. If you can't tell, I'm a big fan of Avery Romero.

Low Class A: Greensboro Grasshoppers  10-10 vs. Asheville Tourists

A slugfest turned into a rain-fest Thursday night as the Grasshoppers game with the Tourists was suspended in the 10th inning due to rain. Each team had scored ten runs, and pounded out 13 hits up to that point. The game will finish up tonight before game two of the series.

Batavia defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 3-0 thanks to a great outing from starting pitcher Jorgan Canvanerio. Mason Davis also provided a solo homerun, and Luis Alberto Sanz reached base in all four trips to the plate. The win moves Batavia one game below .500.

The GCL Marlins dropped a doubleheader with the GCL Cardinals on Thursday.  In the first game 2014 first round pick Tyler Kolek got the start, but he struggled, allowing two hits and a run without getting out of the first inning. In the second game recently traded Francis Martes made his last start in the Marlins organization, allowing three runs in four innings.
