Brad Hand wants to prove he belongs in the Marlins' starting rotation.
Coming off of a nice outing, Hand was solid in Miami's 2-0 victory over the Houston Astros in game one of the three game series on Friday night.
Hand allowed just three hits in seven and a third innings while walking two and striking out four.
Dallas Keuchel was effective until the seventh inning for Houston, when Jarrod Saltalamacchia reached on an error by Enrique Hernandez in center field and Adeiny Hechavarria reached on an infield single before a Jeff Mathis double scored the Marlins' only two runs of the night.
Miami had several opportunities early, notably in the fifth when with runners on first and third and nobody out Hechavarria grounded into a double play.
Donovan Solano was in scoring position in the fourth but was caught stealing third base, and the Marlins had a pair on with no outs in the sixth but couldn't drive in a run.
Bryan Morris and Steve Cishek were both solid out of Miami's bullpen.
