The Miami Marlins picked up their second win in a row by beating the Atlanta Braves in a 3-1 victory in ten innings. The Fish gave up the first run of the night, but Tom Koehler held steady for 6 2/3 innings and performed brilliantly in keeping the team in the game. After giving up the Braves' only run in the second inning off of consecutive singles and a ground ball out, Koehler settled down and quietly dominated the Braves. Atlanta only picked up three hits and five baserunners total outside of that second inning, and Koehler struck out seven Braves batters along the way. He gave way to Mike Dunn in the only other instance of potential difficulty, when the Braves loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh inning. Dunn got Tommy La Stella to ground out and end that threat.
The Marlins were looking very un-threatening early against Julio Teheran. Teheran was spinning a no-hitter until the Fish broke that up in the fifth inning in towering fashion. With two outs, Teheran hung a changeup that Jarrod Saltalamacchia turned on. Salty delivered an impressive launch that easily deposited into the stands for his tenth homer of the season and a tie ball game.
But the Marlins had more shots, particularly in the ninth inning. The Fish got two men aboard early as Casey McGehee walked and Garrett Jones singled off of closer Craig Kimbrel. Kimbrel went to an 0-2 count against Marcell Ozuna before four straight fastballs away and off the plate bought Ozuna a walk. The bases were loaded with no one out and the Braves finally drew their infield in. But Saltalamacchia and Adeiny Hechavarria struck out and Donovan Solano hit a pinch-hit line drive right to the second baseman to finish the inning.
The Fish looked to threaten again in the tenth inning with a similar situation. Christian Yelich singled and was bunted over, buying Giancarlo Stanton an intentional walk. McGehee walked again as well, loading the bags with one out. But this time, Jones delivered with a two-RBI single up the middle.
Steve Cishek closed the game out with an easy perfect tenth and the Marlins picked up their second win in a row.
