Miami Marlins Daily Minor League Report: July 10th

Tyler Kolek makes his third start, Greensboro deals with rain, Michael Mader shines, and Jake Marisnick goes off.

Triple-A: New Orleans Zephyrs W 10-8 @ Oklahoma City RedHawks

Jake Marisnick, CF: 3-5, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 BB

Jordany Valdespin, 2B: 2-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 BB

Josh Rodriguez, 3B: 2-4, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 BB

Elih Villanueva, SP: 1.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 2 SO, 2 BB

The Zephyrs won a high scoring game against Oklahoma City on Thursday night 10-8. Jake Marisnick had a big night, picking up three hits, including a pair of doubles and a triple. This was the second three hit game for Marisnick since being sent back down to New Orleans after his most recent stint in Miami. The win brings the Zephyrs back to a .500 record at 47-47.

Double A: Jacksonville Suns W 6-5 @ Tennessee Smokies

Joe Benson, RF: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB

The Suns scored two runs in the top of the 9th inning to secure a victory against the Tennessee Smokies. The back and forth game was knotted up at four as the Suns stepped to the plate in the ninth. Then, Suns rightfielder Joe Benson singled home Brent Keys to give the Suns a 5-4 lead. Austin Barnes added an RBI single later in the inning to extend the lead to 6-4. The Smokies would rally in the bottom half of the inning but the Suns would survive with a 6-5 victory.

Advanced Class A: Jupiter Hammerheads L 4-5 @ Charlotte Knights

After leading entering the bottom of the 9th inning the Hammerheads fell to the Charlotte Knights 5-4 in 11 innings. The usually reliable Reid Redman blew the save by allowing  two hits, and one run in the bottom of the 9th. Reliever Colby Suggs would take the loss as the Knights singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning. Prospect Colin Moran continues to hit well as he reached base three times with a pair of singles and a walk.

Low Class A: Greensboro Grasshoppers 0-3 @ West Virginia Power, Game Suspended

The Greensboro Grasshoppers are currently losing 3-0 to the West Virginia Power in the top of the 5th inning. The game is currently suspended due to weather and will be continued tomorrow as a part of a doubleheader.

Short Season Class A: Batavia Muckdogs L 0-4  @ Aberdeen Iron Birds

Michael Mader, SP: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 SO

Batavia fell to Aberdeen Thursday night 4-0. Supplemental round draft pick Michael Mader  was fantastic as he held the Iron Birds scoreless in a short three inning stint. He also did not allow a hit or walk any batters. In ten innings pitched this season Mader has an ERA of 0.90 and has only allowed two hits in four outings. Other than Mader the Muckdogs were unimpressive, as the offense could only muster two hits, and the defense committed three errors.

Rookie League: GCL Marlins L 5-7 @ GCL Cardinals

Tyler Kolek, SP: 3.0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 SO, 2 BB

The GCL Marlins continued their struggle of a season by falling to the GCL Cardinals 7-5. Flame-throwing first round pick Tyler Kolek made the third start of his career, and had his best outing to date. He struggled with command, but held the Cardinals hitless, struck out three batters, and allowed no earned runs in three innings of work. Kolek's ERA sits at 2.57 with seven innings pitched over three games. Second round pick Justin Twine contributed with a double, and is hitting .375 in his last ten games.
