After being swept at home by the division-leading Atlanta Braves, the Miami Marlins defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 in the first game of a four game home/away series on Monday night.
Miami was able to get off to a quick start against Tampa Bay starter Alex Cobb, who was 2-0 against the Marlins heading into the start. Christian Yelich opened the bottom of the first with a walk, and advanced to third on an Ed Lucas single that gave Rays third baseman Sean Rodriguez difficulty up the line.
Giancarlo Stanton subsequently walked, and Casey McGehee followed with a bases loaded, two-RBI single to give the Marlins a two run advantage. Garrett Jones grounded into a double play, allowing Stanton to score and giving Miami a three run edge.
Randy Wolf was solid in his second start as a Marlin, going six innings and giving up three hits and one run while walking one and striking out seven. Wolf's lone prolonged inning was the fifth, which began with a walk to Rodriguez and was followed by a Desmond Jennings RBI double to left field.
Miami struggled to add on late, but the first inning rally proved to be enough. Chris Hatcher pitched a scoreless inning of relief, and A.J. Ramos worked around a pair of base runners that reached against Mike Dunn.
Steve Cishek pitched a scoreless ninth for the Marlins.
