MLB Scores: Miami Marlins 6, Chicago Cubs 5

New, comment

The Miami Marlins put some support behind the Anthony DeSclafani start against the Chicago Cubs, but it was Garrett Jones's eventual three-run home run that was the difference in tonight's game.

The Miami Marlins and Chicago Cubs went at it in tonight's contest, and this time it was Miami that responded with a 6-4 win thanks in large part to a big swing by a struggling first baseman. The Fish got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a couple of singles by Rafael Furcal and Adeiny Hechavarria and a throwing error by Starlin Castro that erased a would-be double play. But by the second inning, Anthony DeSclafani and the Marlins found themselves down 3-1,following a mammoth Junior Lake two-run home run and a sacrifice fly from starter Jeff Samardzija.

The game stayed this way until Rafael Furcal delivered a crucial two-out, two-run RBI single following an odd series of events in the fourth inning. The bottom of the Marlins' order loaded the bases with no one out thanks to a walk, single, and a flubbed defensive play by Samardzija in which he tried to go to third and dropped the ball on the throw attempt. DeSclafani grounded a squibber near home plate, however, and put two outs on the board without a run coming home. Furcal's single was a turning point that tied the game.

The Cubs retook the lead in the seventh inning off of Sam Dyson after DeSclafani put up six passable innings of four-run ball with five strikeouts and one walk. The game was left this way until the bottom of the frame, when Adeiny Hechavarria got aboard with a bunt single and Casey McGehee drew a walk. Two pitches later, Garrett Jones turned on a Justin Grimm pitch and blasted it to the home bullpen in right field, launching a three-run shot to put Miami up 6-4.

Steve Cishek gave up a run in the ninth but struck out two batters for his 16th save of the season.

Rafael Furcal and Adeiny Hechavarria both had strong games in support of the Fish. Furcal delivered the two-RBI hit, while Hechavarria had four hits in his return to the top of the lineup.
