The Miami Marlins looked to be in dire straits early in the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates as they attempted to avoid a sweep in the series. The Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Henderson Alvarez, who otherwise put up an excellent start. Alvarez whiffed six batters in seven innings with two walks to his name, but Miami gave up RBI hits to Starling Marte and Josh Harrison to put them behind early in the game.
Meanwhile, Vance Worley, fresh off a strong season thus far in Triple-A Indianapolis, fooled the Fish over seven innings. Worley whiffed five Marlins and only gave up five hits and no walks in seven shutout frames as the Fish struggled offensively early in the contest.
But Miami woke up in the eighth inning, once again off of Pittsburgh's vaunted bullpen. Tony Watson, he of the dominant 0.86 ERA and 2.05 FIP, gave up consecutive hits to Jeff Baker and Rafael Furcal to start the inning. After getting Reed Johnson and Giancarlo Stanton to strike out, Casey McGehee delivered one of his three hits on the day, as he doubled into the gap to drive both runners in and immediately tie the game.
The game went into extra innings and the Marlins flirted with disaster there. A.J. Ramos walked Marte and gave up a single to Andrew McCutchen. He followed it up with a walk to Ike Davis, loading the bases with no one out. But Russell Martin grounded to McGehee to start a clutch 5-2-3 double play, one of two Marlins twin-killings on the day. Ramos then struck out Clint Barmes following an intentional walk to escape the 10th.
The Fish delivered in the bottom of the frame quickly. Rafael Furcal singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Stanton was walked intentionally, but a wild pitch by reliever Jared Hughes left the winning run at third base. McGehee hit a fly ball deep enough to finish the game.
Furcal left the game in the tenth inning following the single with an apparent injury.
