Facing Braves starter Julio Teheran, the Marlins were able to take a quick lead in the bottom of the first. Ed Lucas, who got the start at second base for Miami, singled with one out, and Giancarlo Stanton followed that with a two-run home run to right field to give the Marlins an early two run edge.
Atlanta's offense couldn't rally against Marlins starter Tom Koehler until the sixth inning, when Chris Johnson singled to left field to make it a one run contest. Koehler subsequently recorded his third double play of the night by getting Andrelton Simmons to line out to second base.
Despite a rising pitch count, Manager Mike Redmond stuck with Koehler in the top of the seventh. Teheran opened the inning with a double, and after Jason Heyward tied the game with an RBI triple to left field, Atlanta took the lead on a B.J. Upton sacrifice fly.
In his seven innings, Koehler gave up seven hits and three runs while walking four and striking out five.
The Marlins couldn't score against Teheran in seven and a third innings, and an Adeiny Hechavarria eighth inning single broke a streak of nine consecutive batters retired.
Chris Hatcher and Dan Jennings both pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Koehler, but Miami struggled against Atlanta's bullpen. Craig Kimbrel closed the game for the Braves.
