After struggling to support the starting pitching on the current road trip, a late ninth inning rally led to a 7-5 Miami Marlins victory on Friday night in San Francisco.
Christian Yelich and Derek Dietrich both reached to begin the top of the ninth, and Casey McGehee and Garrett Jones both added RBI singles to give the Marlins a two run advantage. Steve Cishek walked Hector Sanchez to open the bottom of the ninth but then retired the next three batters in order.
Yelich opened the game with a leadoff home run against Yusmeiro Petit, but a Pablo Sandoval RBI double tied the game at one in the first inning.
Dietrich hit a two run home run in the top of the third, his second of the series, to give the Marlins a two run edge, and Adeiny Hechavarria's fourth inning sacrifice fly added to Miami's lead before the Giants got to Alvarez in the bottom of the frame.
Brandon Crawford and Brandon Hicks both added RBIs against Alvarez in the fourth, and following a fifth inning McGehee RBI single, Buster Posey's sacrifice fly cut the Marlins' lead to one before San Francisco tied the game in the sixth with a Gregor Blanco RBI single.
Alvarez didn't have his best stuff, but went six innings and gave up ten hits and five runs while striking out four.
A.J. Ramos and MIke Dunn both pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Alvarez.
