An aging, veteran pitcher who is trying to make a comeback from his second Tommy John operation will be replacing a young star, Jose Fernandez, who is preparing for his first. The Marlins signed 37-year-old left-hander Randy Wolf on Wednesday.

Randy Wolf already was in discussions with other teams. The deal he signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks had a Wednesday out clause. As he weighed options, Wolf didn't envision spending part of his afternoon speaking to media in the Dodger Stadium visitors' dugout. In need of an innings eater after losing Jose Fernandez to impending Tommy John surgery, the Marlins swooped in on Wolf. The two sides agreed to a one-year, $1 million deal with incentive clauses. A native of Canoga Park outside of Los Angeles, Wolf had been with the Diamondbacks' Triple-A affiliate in Reno, Nev.

"From what our doctor saw, they did not want to go the rehab route," Hill said. "Surgery was the best option, and that was the recommendation." Moving on without Fernandez is about to begin. It will be a tough road because the ace is so dynamic, and he's developed into a fan favorite and one of the game's top pitchers.

Ranked by MLB.com as the top left-handed pitching prospect in the game, Heaney continues his development at Double-A Jacksonville, where he is 3-2 with a 2.35 ERA. He has 44 strikeouts in 46 innings.
