Miami Marlins vs. Detroit Tigers: Henderson Alvarez throws fifth no-hitter in Marlins history

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez threw the fifth no-hitter in team history on the final game of the 2013 season against the Detroit Tigers. The game ended on a walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The 2013 season for the Miami Marlins was horrific, but the end of the season was beautiful, and it was darn close to perfect.

In the final game of the 2013 season, the Miami Marlins won in walk-off fashion, and starter Henderson Alvarez threw the team's fifth no-hitter in the process. The Marlins starter went the distance, a full nine innings, with four strikeouts and one walk. He also hit a batter and another reached base on error, thus giving the Tigers only three baserunners throughout the game against Alvarez. The Marlins starter finished his outing in classic fashion, as his ninth inning involved two strong defensive plays on his part for the first two outs and was capped off by an exciting strikeout on a 3-2 pitch followed by an emphatic fist pump.

Alvarez's day still might not have been finished at that point, however, as the Marlins had also been shut out by Justin Verlander and the Tigers' bullpen by that point. Singles by Giancarlo Stanton and Logan Morrison gave the Fish baserunners, and a wild pitch put them 90 feet away from a win. With the bases loaded and two outs, Tigers reliever Luke Petkonen threw a wild pitch that eluded catcher Brayan Pena, and the walk-off wild pitch gave the Marlins the win and cemented Alvarez's no-hitter.
