MLB Scores: Miami Marlins 3, Detroit Tigers 2

The Miami Marlins squeaked past the Detroit Tigers tonight thanks to a bases-loaded double by Giancarlo Stanton and just enough bullpen pitching to escape from various jams.

Attendance: 26,992
Hero of the Game: Giancarlo Stanton (0.208 WPA)
Goat of the Game: Justin Ruggiano (-0.074 WPA)
Play of the Game: Giancarlo Stanton doubled to left field in the third inning. Koyie Hill, Placido Polanco, and Christian Yelich scored. (+0.265 WPA)

The Miami Marlins got just enough offense and just enough pitching to squeak by the best team in the American League. The Fish got ahead early by taking advantage of Jose Alvarez and the opportunity he provided the team. After a relatively benign first two innings, Koyie Hill kicked things off in the third with a single. With two outs, Placido Polanco and Christian Yelich walked to load the bases for star hitter Giancarlo Stanton, and for the only time in the evening, he delivered. Stanton rapped a double down the left field line that cleared the bases and put the Fish up 3-0.

The Marlins did not muster much offense outside of that. Two of the team's three walks and three of its six hits occurred before the fourth inning, with the rest of the game scattered in offensive performance. Stanton was 0-for-3 the rest of the way with two strikeouts, and two more Marlins went hitless.

Tom Koehler did not impress much either with his performance. He struck out three but also walked three batters through 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs along the way. The remaining 3 2/3 innings were pitched brilliantly by Ryan Webb, Chad Qualls, and Steve Cishek. Webb wriggled out of a first-and-third situation with one in the sixth by getting a strikeout. Cishek struck another batter out in a one-hit ninth inning to seal the 34th game of the season for him and the 29th save in a row.
