The Miami Marlins got ahead early in this game versus the Philadelphia Phillies, as a couple of early mistakes by starter Cole Hamels led to a huge hit by, of all players, Adeiny Hechavarria. Hamels walked Justin Ruggiano and allowed a single to Placido Polanco in the second inning, and that led to a solid, compact swing by Hechavarria that drove a pitch to deep center field beyond the reach of Cesar Hernandez. Hechavarria's triple drove the first two runs of the game, but the Marlins failed to capitalize after that, as they recorded three straight outs, including two strikeouts, to end the inning.
For a while, that was enough for Brad Hand. Hand struck out three and walked one in six 1/3 innings of work, but it was the seventh inning that caused him problems. He allowed two singles and a double, and that led to two runs for the Phillies to tie the game. The final single of the inning drove in the last run, and it was off of A.J. Ramos, who then quickly finished the inning and limited the damage.
But the Fish came back in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Marlins got production in almost the exact same way as the second inning: it began with a one-out walk by Justin Ruggiano, and it ended with the ball off the bat of Hechavarria. After a Polanco single, his third hit of the day, Hechavarria bounced one high to second base with the infield drawn in. Jimmy Rollins snagged the ball and threw it wide of home plate, glancing off the glove of Carlos Ruiz. The run scored, but the Marlins again failed to capitalize on second and third with one out.
It was enough to end the game, however, as Steve Cishek struck out two in the top of the ninth to save it for the Fish. It was Cishek's 28th straight save in as many opportunities.
