Hero of the Game: Placido Polanco (0.133 WPA)
Goat of the Game: Tom Koehler (-0.215 WPA)
Play of the Game: Giancarlo Stanton strikes out swinging in the seventh inning. (-0.155 WPA)
The Miami Marlins and Tom Koehler gave up two runs early in the game, as Koehler came out not looking his sharpest. After two early outs, Freddie Freeman, Evan Gattis, and Brian McCann (unsurprisingly) beat the Fish for a single and two doubles, leading to two early runs.
But the Fish regained the lead, thanks in part to a Giancarlo Stanton double that came up clutch and started a rally that led to three runs. Logan Morrison blooped a single to score Christian Yelich, then an Andrelton Simmons error on what looked like a sure-fire double play led to the team's final run.
A 3-2 lead, however, is never safe for the Fish, especially with Koehler, the team's weakest starter, on the mound. A few innings later, it was the top of the lineup and Evan Gattis who hurt the Fish again. Justin Upton and Freeman singled and got on base for a Gattis single. Chris Johnson later singled home the game-leading run, and that ended all of the run scoring for the night.
Teheran ended up recovering against the Fish after that first inning, posting six strikeouts versus three walks in 6 2/3 innings. Meanwhile, Koehler went five innings and struck out two with three walks. The Marlins had only one more critical chance to win the game, as Teheran and the Braves' pen had to combine to keep the Fish away from a run. The Marlins loaded the bases with a single, walk, and hit-by-pitch in the seventh inning, leading to a plate appearance for Giancarlo Stanton. That ended with a strikeout and the last threat for the Fish.
