The Miami Marlins got down early in tonight's game versus the Cleveland Indians, but the Fish rallied back depsite an excellent start by Zach McAllister. McAllister struck out seven Marlins versus just one walk and had a no-hitter going through five innings. The FIsh were baffled through five, drawing just their lone walk as the only baserunner.
McAllister's counterpart, Jacob Turner, also had a solid start, but was a victim of misfortune and poor defense. The Indians scratched out a run in the first inning when Michael Bourn singled, stole a base, moved to third on a ground ball, then came home on a Jason Kipnis single. The misfortune came in the third inning, when Bourn once again reached base, this time on an infield single. He then stole second again, but this time he took third on a wild pitch that got by catcher Rob Brantly. Brantly then airmailed a throw to third, allowing Bourn to score. That was one of two wild pitches thrown by Turner and missed by Brantly in the inning.
But otherwise, Turner played well. He allowed six hits in six innings, but he also struck out six batters on nine swings-and-misses and gave up just two walks, thus avoiding his problems with control. He was still wild, as evidenced by the wild pitches, but it was much improved.
The Fish then came back to tie it in the sixth inning, as Brantly, Christian Yelich, and Ed Lucas combined for two runs with two singles and a double. But the party was short-lived, as Dan Jennings came in the very next frame and recorded just one out before allowing two singles, two walks, and two stolen bases (one a double steal by Bourn and Drew Stubbs) before leaving with the deciding runs scored.
The Marlins had a final chance in the ninth, as they quickly scored on a double by Logan Morrison and a single by pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs. A series of sacrifice bunts, including one that ended up a hit, put runners on second and third with one out. But two consecutive quiet outs sealed the deal aganst the Fish.
