Hero of the Game: Hah
Goat of the Game: Tom Koehler (-0.161 WPA)
Play of the Game: Bryce Harper homered in the fourth inning. Ryan Zimmerman scored. (-0.196 WPA)
The scoring did not start until the fourth inning, but the Washington Nationals sent the Miami Marlins away from the nation's capital on a sour note, shutting them out and blowing the roof off the pitching staff en route to a 9-0 win.
The Fish got very little from Tom Koehler, who put up his worst start of the season. He walked four batters with just one strikeout and gave up two of the Nationals' three home runs. Koehler's outing was only made worse by the fact that Miami was thoroughly shut down by his counterpart, Gio Gonzalez. While Koehler struggled through five innings, Gonzalez breezed through seven with eight strikeouts.
The Marlins' offense was the "beneficiary" of that awful attack. The Fish gathered just four hits, two by Adeiny Hechavarria, and all the hits were singles. The Fish did have one opportunity in the second inning, when all three of Gonzalez's walks eventually led to the Marlins loading the bases with two outs. Ed Lucas flied out harmlessly to end the inning, and the Fish never advanced a runner beyond first after that.
The Fish will head off to Atlanta to face the Braves after coming off yet another sweep that ended ugly.
