Fresh off of Monday's promotion, top prospect Christian Yelich didn't disappoint in his major league debut against the Rockies, leading the Marlins to a 4-2 win behind another stellar performance from Jose Fernandez.
Yelich Is Stellar
The Marlins' major league roster has featured a smorgasbord (fun fact: I somehow spelled that word correctly on the first try) of top minor league prospects and fans got to see the king of them all make his debut on Tuesday against the Rockies, outfielder Christian Yelich. Fresh off a two-hit performance in last week's Future's Game, Yelich went 3-for-4 and drove in two of the Fish's four runs.
We've talked here before about how Yelich has done nothing but rake at the plate since he was drafted back in 2010 and until we see something to the contrary, it's safe to say that Yelich can continue to do so at the big league level. Alright, I'll admit that the .750 clip probably won't be able to sustain itself but, hey, it's fun while it lasts.
For an offense that's desperate to score runs, Yelich spot at number two in the order will allow for plenty of opportunities for Giancarlo Stanton and Logan Morrison to drive in runs. It's just a matter of time before Stanton starts mashes 30 home runs in a month (he hit one in this game) and with Yelich batting in front of him, they won't all be solo shots.
I Have Seen The Future
In addition to the stellar debut of Yelich, Mr. All-Star/Younger And Incredibly More Successful Than This Writer, Jose Fernandez, allowed just two runs over seven innings, striking out eight. With this performance, Fernandez has now struck out 111 in 111.2 innings of work. Not. Too. Shabby.
Sometimes we can get lulled into indifference about a certain player's performance once we see them perform repeatedly at a high level. Jose Fernandez is performing repeatedly at a high level. It's important, however, to realize how special this performance is for a 20-year-old rookie and even though we'll start to read about the countdown to his innings cap fairly soon, let's be sure to enjoy the fact that Jose Fernandez is ours and you can't have him.
Looking Ahead
The Marlins finish out their four-game set with Colorado on Thursday before returning home to face the Pirates. There, we will see if Christian Yelich can LIGHT THAT BABY UP. I assume it will forever be the crowning achievement of his professional career, even if he were to win 57 World Series titles.
