Triple-A: New Orleans Zephyrs
L 0-1 vs. Nashville Sounds
Kyle Skipworth, C: 2-for-3
Doug Mathis, SP: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Despite recording eight hits, Triple-A New Orleans could not manage to squeeze a run across the board in Saturday's loss to Nashville. On the bright side, Kyle Skipworth had two hits. Considering he's hitting .160 on the season, that's pretty much a cause for celebration. Jake Smolinski also stole his fourth base of 2013.
Double-A: Jacksonville Suns
W 6-2 vs. Huntsville Stars
Aaron Dudley, 1B: 2-for-4, 2 HR (1,2), 2 RBI
Robert Morey, SP: 9 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
Robert Morey went the distance in Jacksonville's 6-2 win over Huntsville. Aaron Dudley, an undrafted free agent out of the University of Toledo in 2010, hit his first two home runs of the season. For Morey, this was his first start longer than five innings since May.
High Class A: Jupiter Hammerheads
L 1-7 @ Fort Myers Miracle
Wilfredo Gimenez, C: 2-for-4, 2B
Jose Urena, SP: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Jose Urena got no support from his offense, as Fort Myers defeated Jupiter 7-1 on Saturday night. Urena was coming off of two seven inning almost-flawless starts, so some regression could be expected. Jupiter falls to 37-34 on the season with the loss.
Low Class A: Greensboro Grasshoppers
W 7-6 @ Hickory Crawdads
Anthony Gomez, 2B: 2-for-5, 2B, HR (4), 3 RBI
Yordy Cabrera, 3B: 2-for-5, HR (10), RBI
Austin Brice, SP: 5 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
Austin Brice pitched five hitless innings and he got plenty of run support from his offense in Greensboro's 7-6 win over Hickory. Despite his high potential, Brice has struggled for the majority of the season. Hopefully, this is a sign that he has gotten himself back on track. Also of note is Yordy Cabrera hitting his tenth home run of 2013. Cabrera's 10 HR's are not only a career-high, but a sign of him finally tapping into some of his raw power.
Short-Season: Batavia Muckdogs
W 2-1 vs. Mahoning Valley Scrappers
Austin Dean, LF: 1-for-4, 3B
J.T. Riddle, 3B: 2-for-3, BB, RBI
Ryan Newell, SP: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K
Ryan Newell, a 2012 7th Round pick known for his exceptional fastball velocity, struck out eight in six impressive innings of work on Saturday. Newell will definitely be an interesting player to watch on Batavia this season. Also, 2012 fourth-round pick Austin Dean tripled and J.T. Riddle reached base three times. Riddle, the Marlins 2013 13th-round pick out of the University of Kentucky, played second in college but I'm not surprised the Marlins organization is letting him play third as well, due to his strong arm.
Rookie: GCL Marlins
L 0-5 @ GCL Cardinals
Miles Williams, LF: 1-for-1, 2 BB
Gabriel Castellanos, SP: 3 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K
In the Marlins second game in the young Gulf Coast League season, they were one-hit by Jordan Swagerty and other Cardinals pitchers. Miles Williams, the Marlins 2013 15th round pick, was a shortstop in High School but converted to playing the outfield at Cal State Northridge. At 6'0 200 lbs and a fairly talented athlete, Williams will be a player to watch on this GCL Marlins roster. Gabriel Castellanos struck out seven, and didn't give up a hit, but he still was credited with the loss. Baseball can be such an odd game...
