The Miami Marlins jumped on Lance Lynn and the St. Louis Cardinals and put up one of their best offensive performances. Unfortunately it was tied to one of their worst pitching efforts as the Cardinals won 13-7.

Play of the Game: Giancarlo Stanton homered in the second inning. Ed Lucas scored. (+0.198 WPA)

The Miami Marlins should have been happy that the team scored seven runs today against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Fish jumped out with four runs in the first inning and tacked on two more in the second on another home run by Giancarlo Stanton. In the first inning, the Marlins primarily did their damage with two outs, Adeiny Hechavarria and Rob Brantly delivered two-out RBI singles to get the Marlins three runs as the Fish went through their whole lineup in the first inning.

Unfortunately for the Marlins, despite the efforts of Stanton, Brantly, Juan Pierre, and Ed Lucas, each of whom got three hits, the Fish could not keep the Cards away from home plate as well. Tom Koehler allowed five runs in the first inning against the Cardinals as well, topped off by three straight hits by the Cards scoring four runs. Koehler left after allowing a whopping nine runs in just 4 2/3 innings, including two home runs by Carlos Beltran and David Freese.

Thus the Marlins scored six runs in five innings and still found themselves down two runs in a difficult shootout versus the Cardinals. It did not help that the bullpen tacked on four more runs, as A.J. Ramos, Edgar Olmos, Ryan Webb, and Dan Jennings allowed nine hits and four runs, including another home run by Beltran, in just 5 1/3 innings of work. The Marlins managed just two hits for the remainder of the game and fell 13-7.
