The Miami Marlins allowed too many runs too early in the game, and their anemic offense could not recover those runs back against the San Diego Padres in Petco Park. Marlins starter Alex Sanabia got off to a terrible start in his hometown return, jumping out to an early four-run lead on the native San Diegoer. Meanwhile, the Fish blew two early opportunities to score runs and eventually failed to get enough runners on base to make a difference in the team's eventual 4-1 defeat.

Sanabia returned to his hometown, but it was not a fun homecoming. The Padres scored all four of their runs in the first two innings, three of them coming in a tumultuous second inning. The second inning started with a single by Jedd Gyorko and a subsequent home run by Will Venable; it was Sanabia's sixth home run allowed in seven starts. It then continued as Sanabia allowed a double to Alex Amarista and a single to Everth Cabrera to allow him to score.

But even after the four runs scored, Sanabia never really settled down. He allowed four hits and a walk in the 2 1/3 remaining innings pitched, ending the night with only three strikeouts versus two walks along with the home run allowed. That brought his season marks up to a 4.85 ERA and a 5.66 FIP, both of which typically would ensure replacement if the Marlins had any actual options.

Meanwhile, the Marlins' offense was sunk again Petco Park and the San Diego Padres. The Fish had chances to score in the first inning with a runner on third base with two outs and in the fifth with two on and two out, but in both chances the team failed to deliver. The Marlins' lone bright spot offensively tonight was Marcell Ozuna, as the rookie drove in the team's only run and picked up a single and a double on the evening.

The Marlins will attempt to avoid a sweep tomorrow afternoon, with Ricky Nolasco taking the mound.
