The Miami Marlins not only took advantage of a floundering Roy Halladay, but more importantly played a great all-around game of baseball. This game acted as a rare treat for Marlins fans that have endured baseball's worst run scoring team.
It became evident early on that Halladay could not locate his pitches, as he loaded the bases in the first inning off two walks and a hit by pitch. Marcell Ozuna then drove a double to left field, scoring two runs. Adeiny Hechavarria later tripled that inning, scoring three more runs. Hechavarria apparently wasn't satisfied with a three-run triple, and hit a grand slam in the fourth inning, knocking Halladay out of the game.
The team finally got to reliever Raul Valdes after three scoreless innings, loading the bases for Marcell Ozuna, who singled in a run. Two innings later, Justin Ruggiano hit his fifth home run off Chad Durbin. An inning later, he hit sixth home run off Jeremy Horst. When the dust had settled, the Marlins had scored a season high fourteen runs.
Kevin Slowey delivered another very impressive start, pitching seven scoreless innings. He allowed only two hits, while walking two batters, and striking out seven. Slowey leads Marlins starters with a 1.81 ERA. While his .250 Batting Average on Balls in Play (BABIP) and 5.7 percent Home Run to Fly Ball rate (HR/FB) indicate that he may regress some, his peripherals are otherwise solid. In other words, his performance may not be a complete mirage.
A large component of Slowey's sucess Sunday was the Marlins' excellent defense, most notably from Justin Ruggiano. Take a look at this catch to rob Chase Utley of a double:
The Marlins will travel out west to face the San Diego Padres tomorrow in a 10:10 PM EST start.
