Fernandez Has Awful Outing

Jose Fernandez didn't even make it through four innings, allowing seven runs, four of them earned. A Kelly Johnson three-run homer in the second inning made a bad start even worse. Johnson had two homers, and a double, in a four-hit day on Sunday. Fernandez threw a 83 MPH slider to Johnson low and away. However, it was breaking towards Johnson, a left-handed hitter, making it much easier to make solid contact with it. Fernandez needs to learn that this pitch cannot be thrown on the outside half of the plate to left-handed hitters without extreme caution. Hopefully, this was just a anomalously terrible outing for Fernandez and he will rebound against the Mets at Marlins Park later in the week.

Marlins Score Six

Trailing by six runs heading into the fourth inning, the Marlins put up two straight three-run innings to get within reach. Justin Ruggiano had a solo homer and Chris Coghlan and Adeiny Hechavarria both had doubles. However, after those two innings, the Marlins struggled to get runners on base.

Tomorrow, the Marlins take on the Rays again at Tropicana Field, this time at 7:10 PM ET. Kevin Slowey will take the mound for the Fish and he'll face Jeremy Hellickson. Hopefully, Slowey will be able to battle through his lat injury and return to being the pitcher he has been at times during this season.
