The Miami Marlins stayed close throughout the game against the Chicago White Sox, as both Ricky Nolasco and Jake Peavy had strong outings on the mound against two of the worst offenses in baseball. The White Sox struck first with in the third inning with a double by Alexei Ramirez to bring home former Marlins outfielder Alejandro De Aza. But after that point, Ricky Nolasco held the Sox to just two hits and no runs with three strikeouts, as he put up yet another strong performance in his bid to rebuild his trade and free agent value.
Nolasco looked excellent in tonight's game, as he once again put on the strikeout touch that he has had most of May. He put up six strikeouts in seven innings and got an excellent 16 swings and misses in just 109 pitches. That rate is a 14.6 percent swinging strike rate. Nolasco has also done a good enough job staying around the strike zone as usual.
However, the Marlins remained down 1-0 entering the ninth inning. But with one out in the ninth, Jake Peavy hung a curveball on the lower inner half of the plate and Derek Dietrich muscled it up for a game-tying home run to left field. Peavy ended the night with five strikeouts, two walks, and the sole home run along with five other hits in a complete game effort that appeared like it might go to waste.
But the White Sox came back as well in the ninth inning against Ryan Webb, who had been hiding weak peripherals with a strong ERA all year long. Another former Marlin, DeWayne Wise, pulled off a leadoff double that was immediately followed by a Conor Gillaspie single that led to the second straight walk-off for the White Sox.
The Marlins will send Alex Sanabia to the mound to bust up the sweep tomorrow afternoon.
