Play of the Game: Paul Goldschmidt homered to left field, scoring Gerardo Parra (-0.163 WPA)

The Miami Marlins lost their sixth consecutive game, as the Arizona offense ploughed through Kevin Slowey. The Marlins lost control of the game in the first inning, and the hole only deepened as the game progressed.

Paul Goldschmidt was particularly devastating, going four for five with two home runs on the evening. Eric Chavez also homered as part of a four-hit night.

The magic appears to be fading for Slowey, who after posting a 1.81 ERA in his first seven starts, has been crushed in back-to-back outings. Manager Mike Redmond opted to take Slowey out of the game after the third inning, bringing in Wade LeBlanc for long relief.

LeBlanc proved to be a marked improvement, delivering four strong innings for the Marlins. But the Diamondbacks took advantage of Jon Rauch late in the game, scoring an additional two runs, and raising Rauch's ERA to 7.56.

This was apparently the final straw for Rauch, as the front office designated the 6-foot-11 right-hander for assignment following the game.

The other main story of the game was the Marlins' inability to take advantage of Trevor Cahill early on. The 25-year-old star struggled to locate his sinker early in the game, walking four Marlins batters. But the Marlins drove none of these baserunners home, allowing Cahill to regain his control and go deep into the game.

Cahill eventually surrendered one run in the bottom of the seventh by giving up three singles to Greg Dobbs, Placido Polanco, and Rob Brantly. The Fish should have scored more, but killed multiple rallies by hitting into three double plays. They did add one run in the ninth inning, as Dobbs hit a double to right field, and was driven in by Polanco.

The Marlins will have to hope Tom Koehler can do better tomorrow. They will face another former Athletics starter, Brandon McCarthy, who has a 5.63 ERA so far this year. The start time is 7:10 PM.
