Miami Marlins news: Adeiny Hechavarria set to return from DL, Nick Green to be designated for assignment

After a short rehab stint in the low minors, it appears Adeiny Hechavarria is set tor return from the disabled list and rejoin the Marlins for their upcoming road trip starting tomorrow at Philadelphia. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports that Hechavarria will come off the DL tomorrow and join the Marlins in Philadelphia for the first of a four-game set. Hechavarria has been out since April 18 with a right elbow contusion suffered before that day's game during batting practice.

Hechavarria was hitting just .184/.231/.286 to start the season, but he just his first home run as a Marlin the game before the injury. He hit a three-run home run off of Dan Haren on April 16 that helped lead the Marlins to an 8-2 win.

To make room on the roster, the Marlins are likely to designate shortstop Nick Green for assignment. Green was in Triple-A New Orleans before being called up to fill in for Hechavarria, but he leaves having done a passable job on the field. Through Wedneday's 7-6 loss to the New York Mets, Green was hitting .292/.321/.417 (.314 wOBA).

"It’s disappointing," Green said. "Everybody wants to be in the big leagues and you got to try to do the best you can when you get a chance. That’s all I could do."

The Marlins may need Green in the future, as the club is low on middle infield depth. Chris Valaika is primarily being used as the utility infielder, but he is also backing up third base to start the year due to the continued presence of Greg Dobbs in the starting lineup at first base. The Marlins have three first baseman on the DL in Logan Morrison, Casey Kotchman, and Joe Mahoney.

Frisaro's article also mentions that the Marlins will likely option lefty starter Brad Hand back to Triple-A as well. He was used in today's game versus the Mets, as he struck out three batters and walked two in 1 2/3 innings. No word yet on whom the Marlins will bring up, though it is expected to be a position player due to the current dearth of those players on the bench right now.
