The Marlins have called up catcher Kyle Skipworth to replace injrued first baseman Casey Kotchman on the roster. Skipworth was the Marlins' first-round draft. Skipworth was the Marlins’ first-round draft pick in 2008, the sixth overall pick. Skipworth presumably will spell Rob Brantly and Miguel Olivo behind the plate, since Olivo could get some action at first base.

Add first base to the list of problems the Marlins are dealing with during the first week of the season. First baseman Casey Kotchman was placed on the disabled list Friday with a strained left hamstring. "I don’t know if I’ve ever been around a team that had to have multiple first basemen,’’ Redmond said before Miami’s series finale against the Nationals.

First base at Citi Field was crowded with Marlins before Friday’s game as five players took ground balls during an emergency drill held by infield coach Perry Hill. Outfielder Chris Coghlan and catcher Miguel Olivo joined outfielder Austin Kearns, infielder Chris Valaika and backup first baseman Greg Dobbs about four hours before the game. "You know that’s how (tough) it has been so far when we got four guys over there and only three gloves. That’s kind of the situation we’re in,’’ manager Mike Redmond said with a laugh.
