The Miami Marlins had been suffering from a power outage in recent games, but the Chicago Cubs resolved some of that yesterday in the eventual 3-2 loss. Well, it seems the Cubs were more than interested in still getting the Marlins to score runs, as the Fish beat out two more home runs, including two more shots by Giancarlo Stanton, en route to a
The Fish got their offense started in the first inning, as Stanton stepped up following a walk by Chris Coghlan and ripped a fastball by Cubs starter Carlos Villanueva all the way to left field past the seats and into the promenade. The home run had the perfect blend of terrifying speed and massive distance, as the ball launched off of his bat and flew out in a hurry. The Marlins took a quick 2-1 lead.
The Cubs fought back in the third inning thanks to a pair of runs off of Ricky Nolasco, who struggled in the afternoon's game. Nolasco struck out just two batters and walked two as well in seven innings, though he did also give up just four hits. The defense helped Nolasco out with enough nice plays to keep the Fish in the game.
The sixth inning was when the Marlins broke through. Juan Pierre got aboard with a base hit with one out and was able to steal second. With two outs, Stanton delivered again, this time with a single that tied the game up. The Cubs then curiously intentionally walked the lefty Greg Dobbs to face the equally poor righty Donovan Solano, but Solano hit a line drive sharply off of Starlin Castro's glove that got through and drove home Stanton to give the Marlins a 4-3 lead.
Then the Fish simply piled on. Nick Green hit a seventh-inning solo home run, his first of the year and first as a Marlin in his career. Then, after a shaky inning by Mike Dunn, Giancarlo Stanton followed that up with another home run, yet another shot to left field, and the Marlins built a 6-3 edge.
Steve Cishek finished up the ninth inning by giving up a Dioner Navarro solo home run but otherwise escaping for his second save of the season.
