The game thread came to a close with a resounding "The Marlins lose. Theeeeeee Marlins lose" spoken from the mouth of our leader, Michael Jong. The proclamation seemed like an appropriate close to the game. After getting the first two men on to start the inning an botched Juan Pierre bunt resulted in a fielders choice out and idle runners. Then a routine out followed by an ugly ugly ugly Giancarlo Stanton strikeout with three swinging strikes to close out the game. The Giancarlo Stanton at bat in particular could serve as a quick little summary of the Marlins 2013 season.
For most of the game, however, the Marlins remained competitive. After Kevin Slowey allowed one earned run in the first the Marlins offense fired back scoring three unanswered runs off of Edwin Jackson. Then the Cubs decided to answer the runs with one run in the fourth and then again in the sixth.
From the sixth on the game would remain tied after clean outings by Chad Qualls and Mike Dunn. Then Steve Cishek came in to pitch the ninth and on one poorly placed fastball Luis Valbuena had put the Cubs ahead by one run. The score would remain the same until the bitter end. An end that started off promising with a leadoff walk for Donovan Solano off of the typically wild Carlos Marmol, but concluded with a Giancarlo Stanton strikeout at the hands of the K happy Carlos Marmol.
