Miami Marlins Weekly Minor League Recap: April 13th - April 20th

This week's look at the Miami Marlins' minor league system includes another tough outing by Jacob Turner, an impressive one by Brian Flynn and company in Double-A Jacksonville, and some nice hitting in the low minors.

USA TODAY Sports

Triple-A New Orleans: Jordan Brown had a big week at the plate for New Orleans. Brown went 5-for-15 with 2 doubles and a homer off of Yoshinori Tateyama. Ed Lucas, Gorkys Hernandez, and Bryan Petersen all saw their batting averages come back to down to earth by the end of the week, but part of that is probably due to the face that New Orleans finally faced some decent pitching. Josh Lindblom, Michael Wacha, and John Gast all provided problems for the New Orleans bats. On the pitching side, Jacob Turner allowed five earned runs and four walks in just five innings pitched. Turner continues to struggle early in the season. Elih Villanueva had two pretty impressive starts, allowing just one earned run in both of them. New Orleans finished the week winning only two out of the seven games they played.

Double-A Jacksonville: The Suns went 4-2 in the last week. Kyle Jensen had two homers on the week, and Mark Canha and Derek Dietrich continued to rake. Michael Brady picked up two more saves, adding to his season total of four, which is the most of any pitcher in the Southern League. In one notable game, Jacksonville shut out Donald Lutz and Pensacola thanks to some amazing pitching performance from Brian Flynn, Arquimedes Caminero, Edgar Olmos, and Brady. Flynn needed only sixty-nine pitches to go six innings, allowing only three hits and two walks. Caminero took control of the next two innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Olmos, who had two wins on the week, allowed only one hit in the next two innings, before turning the ball over to Michael Brady to close the door. Overall, this was a very impressive week for Jacksonville, who is at the top of their division at 9-5.

High-A Jupiter: Jupiter was led by their pitching in the last week. Jose Urena outdueled Francisco Liriano and Jose Contreras on April 15, spinning six shutout innings allowing only one hit and one walk. Later, Justin Nicolino shut down Bradenton in five innings of work. Nicolino only allowed one hit, striking out two with no walks in a game that lasted under two hours. Austin Barnes and Isaac Galloway both had a rough week at the plate. Combined, these two struck out nineteen times. Austin Nola hit .435/.519/.652 to lead the Hammerheads. Jupiter won four out of the eight games they played in the last week.

Low-A Greensboro: Greensboro went 3-4 in the last seven games. Jesus Solorzano and Yordy Cabrera both had two homers on the week. Austin Brice pitched five shutout innings in his first start, but struggled in his second, lasting only 2.2 innings. Prospect Mason Hope gave up 15 hits and 11 runs in two starts, as his start to the season has been very discouraging. Solarzano, Cabrera, and Alfredo Lopez all had two stolen bases on the week. If Solorzano and Cabrera can keep this up, it won't be long before they start turning heads. Overall, Greensboro had a disappointing week from their pitching prospects, but Solorzano and Cabrera were fantastic at the plate.
