The Miami Marlins were lacking two outfielders on their bench on Sunday, as Austin Kearns was a late scratch due to a hospitalization for an irregular heartbeat and Giancarlo Stanton sat out a third game with a sore left shoulder. Initially, Kearns was kept overnight for observation to make sure everything was all right after he had an episode of a racing heartbeat and associated symptoms. Meanwhile, Stanton began suffering from soreness after making a diving catch against the New York Mets, and this soreness caused him to miss the Philadelphia Phillies series.

One player seems to be better, while the other player's status is unknown. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports that Kearns was released from the hospital, while Stanton went to the doctor to have his shoulder examined.

"The good news is, Kearns has been discharged from the hospital," manager Mike Redmond said. "He’s on his way over [to the ballpark] but he hasn’t been cleared for baseball activities. He’s got a couple of more tests to do tomorrow. He will be here tonight. Definitely, that’s great news that he seems like he’s going to be alright."

For Kearns, that is excellent news, but he will not be available in tonight's game versus the Washington Nationals. Kearns was initially slated to start on Sunday thanks in part to Stanton's ongoing injury, but his symptoms prompted an immediate hospital visit. Hopefully he passes these supposed tests and makes a full recovery to the bench soon.

For Stanton, the shoulder issue is beginning to grow concerning, even though nothing as of now has been said. Stanton has no history with that type of injury, so it should not be a major concern of the past, but the Marlins should still be a little concerned about yet another injury. Combine that with his struggles and it could be a difficult April for him to readjust after missing some time.

The Marlins are hoping neither player will require a disabled list stint, but they will consider it for either or both if needed. Both will probably be at the stadium tonight, but neither will be available until at least tomorrow. For the Marlins' sake, Stanton had better not require DL time, because it will only serve to lengthen his already difficult start of the season.
