Alex Sanabia never proved that he can consistently win as a starter in a major league rotation. And that may have cost him a job.
According to a team press release, the Arizona Diamondbacks claimed Sanabia off of waivers. Sanabia was 3-7 with a 4.88 earned run average in ten starts for Miami.
Because of all of the injuries to starting pitchers the Marlins had to cope with throughout spring training, Sanabia was given an extended look. He pitched well before the start of the season and, as a result, opened the season in Miami's starting rotation.
Sanabia was expected to begin the season in Triple-A New Orleans before learning that he had made the team because of injuries to Nathan Eovaldi and Henderson Alvarez.
Before being demoted, Sanabia struggled with his control. In the 10 games he appeared in, Sanabia walked 25 while striking out 31. He injured his groin in a game during which he only lasted 4 1/3 innings against the San Diego Padres on May 7.
Sanabia made his final start as a Marlin on May 26 against the White Sox. He was a Marlin for parts of three big league seasons, during which he went 8-10 with a 4.15 ERA over a span of 28 games.
Statistically, Sanabia's best year was his rookie year in 2010. In 15 games he went 5-3 with a 3.73 ERA and struck out 47 while only walking 16.
Sanabia, who was selected in the 32nd round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, also was seen pitching out of Miami's bullpen. Arizona may take a similar approach with Sanabia, whose changeup allowed him to be successful when facing a predominantly left-handed hitting lineup.
Miami also announced that pitcher Josh Wall was claimed by the Los Angeles Angels. Wall was acquired from the Dodgers in the Ricky Nolasco trade in July. He never made an appearance at the major league level for the Marlins.
Wall was one of three pitchers, with Angel Sanchez and Steven Ames being the other two, who the Dodgers sent to Miami. Wall went 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA in 20 relief appearances for Triple-A New Orleans after being traded to Miami.
